The Beach Report: motorcyclist dies in fiery wreck when he rear-ended pickup

07/07/2014 — Police say Kenneth Hunt 2nd, 24, of Dover, was killed when he crashed his 2004 Kawasaki ZX6 motorcycle at high speed into the rear of a 1999 Dodge Ram 1500 pickup truck. Both vehicles were traveling on the southbound lanes around 1:40 a.m. Sunday.

Witnesses said they heard the high-pitched motorcycle engine approach the intersection of Coastal Highway and Old Landing Road. That is where they reported hearing an impact and the Kawasaki slide across the roadway toward Atlantic Liquors and burst into flames.

Sailboat skipper of Bad Cat needed hoist to hospital by Coast Guard

PORTSMOUTH, Va. – The Coast Guard medevaced a 68-year-old man Friday from a sailboat 127 miles east of Virginia Beach. A crewman aboard the 37-foot sailboat Bad Cat contacted Coast Guard 5th District Command Center watchstanders via a satellite phone at approximately 12:24 p.m. to report the captain of the vessel was suffering from a skin infection.

Coast Guard medevacs diver offshore from Hatteras Inlet; ‘Under Pressure’ skipper called for help for diver under too much pressure

The Coast Guard medevaced a 52-year-old man from a dive boat approximately 18 miles southeast of Hatteras Inlet, North Carolina, Sunday.
The captain of the dive boat Under Pressure contacted Coast Guard North Carolina Command Center watchstanders via VHF-FM at approximately 3 p.m. and reported a diver was suffering from from signs of decompression sickness.

U.S. Coast Guard releases 2013 Recreational Boating Statistics Report; Alcohol Leading Cause of Fatal

The U.S. Coast Guard released its 2013 Recreational Boating Statistics Wednesday, revealing that boating fatalities that year totaled 560 — the lowest number of boating fatalities on record.
From 2012 to 2013, deaths in boating-related accidents decreased 14 percent, from 651 to 560, and injuries decreased from 3,000 to 2,620, a 12.7 percent reduction. The total reported recreational boating accidents decreased from 4,515 to 4,062, a 10 percent decrease.

It was no ordinary fin. That fin rose six feet out of the water and was making a bee line to the stern of our boat. I dove across the surging mass of fish into the cuddy cabin and grabbed my 12 gauge Remington stainless steel security pump shotgun that was loaded with pumpkin ball slugs. I also seized the Crown Royal bag of shells for additional ammo.
