Canned fire chief in Anne Arundel lists accomplishments

I was notified this morning by the County Executive Elect Steve Schuh that I would not be retained into the next administration. I took the reins 18 months ago during a turbulent time for our Department with poor labor relations, lack of fiscal prudence, poor response times, areas with unacceptable ISO ratings, and a lack of diversity in the hiring process. Ill winds stranded boaters in dark on Bay island; Maryland State Police choppers to the rescue!

The stranded persons were traveling on a 22 foot boat that became disabled due to a fuel system issue. Strong winds blew the vessel onto the beach of a small island. The victims were able to call for assistance using a cellular telephone. Due to the strong winds and shallow water, rescue boats were unable to reach the stranded persons.

The husband, wife, and two children weren’t inside. The husband was too upset to talk on camera but tells ABC7 that he was brewing coffee before going to work and doesn’t know if that may have started the fire. The cause is under investigation.

“I’m still kind of jittery myself knowing how close it was,” Watson says. “I’m glad that no one was in the house.”

The fire was determined to be Arson and Investigators were able to develop that a female juvenile occupant of the involved apartment was responsible. During the investigation the female juvenile confessed to using an ordinary cigarette lighter and paper to set the fire. It was also determined that the juvenile and her mother had been engaged in a domestic argument prior to the fire

Arsonist strikes again in heart of Waldorf; 2nd time in a week

Nearly 40 firefighters responded from Waldorf, LaPlata, Brandywine, Baden, Hughesville and Bryans Road Fire Departments and extinguished the fire located just inside the front door within 5 minutes. Smoke and heat created by the fire spread throughout the store and caused approximately $400,000 in damage to the contents. An additional $100,000 is damage is estimated to the structure at the front of the business. No injuries were reported during the incident.
