Tractor-trailer inferno takes at least three lives after head-on crash on Rt. 404; victims identified

A preliminary investigation conducted by the Maryland State Police CRASH Team, with the assistance of troopers from the Easton Barrack, indicates that just before 7:00 a.m. this morning, the driver of a tractor trailer was traveling westbound on MD 404 in the area of Church Lane. For reasons unknown at this time the vehicle crossed the double yellow lines into the eastbound lane, side swiping another tractor trailer. The westbound tractor trailer continues in the eastbound lanes and struck another tractor trailer head on.

At approximately 9:00 am Virginia Marine Police Officer Jamie Hogge happened to be in the Essex County Sheriff’s office collecting information on an earlier incident regarding the Saint Margaret School’s crewing team, when the distress call came in about the boating accident. Officer Hogge immediately called the Marine Police Dispatch Center advising them of the incident. The Dispatch Center sent out an alert to all boats in the area.

Despite Stevens violently struggling with officers, police were successful in the safe rescue of Stevens from the residence. He was immediately transported to a local hospital for treatment for his condition and his self-inflicted injuries. During the ordeal, area residences were evacuated and held in the community pool house parking lot for their safety.

On July 1, 2011, Deputy State Fire Marshals and Special Agents with the ATF investigated a four alarm blaze at the Stop & Go Mini-Mart and gas station located at 521 & 523 South Main Street in Federalsburg. The blaze was called in at approximately 3:50 a.m. by a passerby. The fire heavily damaged two connected masonry structures.
