Acting on a tip, an officer checked the beach at Mountain Point at the tip of the island and found corn washed on shore near an offshore stationary hunting blind. Officers kept the area under surveillance and on Jan. 24 – the last day of duck season – found five hunters in the blind and in an anchored Jon boat. A large quantity of shelled corn was found in the boat launching area
Since that time, Montgomery County detectives have been working tirelessly with the Bedford County Sheriff’s Office and the Virginia State Police, looking for evidence and gathering information that may indicate that Welch and other persons had a connection to the girls’ disappearance. We believe that there are people, including family members of Dick and Lloyd Welch, who have information that would further this investigation.

NRP officers were called to the scene. A search of the vehicle turned up a loaded shotgun with the safety off, shotgun ammunition and a spotlight.
Kurt Andrew Simmons, 29, of Centreville, was charged by NRP with having a loaded firearm in a vehicle, casting rays (jacklighting), hunting deer without a license, hunting out of season, deer hunting at night and hunting while intoxicated. Queen Anne’s County charged him with driving under the influence.
The bicyclist, Fedora M. Henderson, 31, of Henrico, Va., was transported to VCU Medical Center, where she died later Wednesday morning.
Too Fast Driver Killed When He Struck Working Snowplow on Virginia I-284 – A Caterpillar Motorgrader (operated equipment not motor vehicle), was attempting to plow snow on the shoulder, when a 2000 Honda Accord struck it from behind.
Police say the Toyota went into a sideways slide and crossed the center line into the northbound lane of travel. The Jeep was travelling north and subsequently struck the Toyota in the passenger’s side causing severe intrusion into the passenger’s compartment of the vehicle. There were no passengers in either vehicle.
Both operators were transported to St. Mary’s MedStar. The operator of the Toyota Camry was pronounced deceased and the operator of the Jeep was listed in stable condition.
Both helicopter crews arrived on scene at about 8:15 p.m. The Coast Guard helicopter crew hoisted the people and transported them to Air Station Elizabeth City in good condition. No injuries were reported.
Rescued were vessel owner Frank W. Rawley, 55, Douglas Rider, 58, Lorette Medwel, 55, and a 14-year-old male. The survivors were sailing from Beaufort to Pensacola.
The catch for the day tallied nearly a hundred fish. Likely, in a month or two you can easily put more poundage of catfish in your cooler during the pre-spawn Mid-Atlantic catfish bite but it is hard to beat the variety of fish in Florida and warm weather in winter.
CHINESE NEW YEAR POACHERS WERE HAULING IN THE BIG ONES
HAMPTON, VA. — Two Chinese men who police believe were out to snatch every large fish they could, regardless of legal limits, rules or species – in order to sell whole large fish to various Chinese restaurants for the Chinese New Year on Feb. 19th, now face serious felony charges.
