The initial investigation has determined that the crash occurred as a 46-year-old Middletown, Del., man was operating a 2002 Jeep Liberty and was traveling in a northbound direction on Dexter Corner Road north of Ratledge Road, just south of Townsend. For an unknown reason, the Jeep left the east edge of Dexter Corner Road before veering back onto the roadway and leaving the west edge where it began to overturn.

The trooper found the driver was armed with a firearm and suffering from an apparent head wound. The driver was talking with troopers and a negotiator, who responded to the scene, but refused to comply with commands to put down the weapon and safely exit the vehicle.

During the course of the traffic stop, the trooper discovered human remains concealed inside the Mustang. The remains were transported to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Norfolk for examination, autopsy and positive identification.
