MARYLAND STATE POLICE BEAT / Hollering Hobo with pants down is a good way for a drunk to attract cops – even if it is ‘Sin City’

LEXINGTON PARK, MD. – There are plenty of bums roaming around Lexington Park on any day and many of them are drunk. But most of them have their pants on. With several DUI convictions under his belt, at least this time, this suspect is alleged to be only walking while intoxicated. Police say that on Friday, March 3, 2017, at 4:41 pm, TFC B. Ditoto observed an incoherent male subject who was stumbling into the roadway. The suspect, James Patrick Morris, 35, who may be residing in one of the Hobo Camps in Lexington Park, appeared to be under the influence of alcohol. He began yelling and cursing loudly and his pants were partially falling down. TFC B. Ditoto attempted to place Mr. Morris under arrest, and a brief struggle ensued. He was quickly subdued and charged with Assault Second Degree, Intoxicated Public Disturb, Disorderly Conduct, and Resist/Interfere with Arrest. Morris was transported to the St. Mary’s County Detention Center, where he was given a new address, and held pending a bond review with the District Court Commissioner.

Morris was found guilty of DUI on Dec. 19, 2012, and in a plea deal with St. Mary’s States Attorney Richard Fritz, was sentenced to one year in jail with all but fifteen days suspended. Morris was arrested by Maryland State Trooper Eric Evans on Sept. 12, 2012.

Calvert Sheriff’s Deputy J. Ward arrested Morris for DUI on Sept. 23, 2016, at 2:22 pm on Rt. 4 at Plum Point Road. In Calvert County District Court, he entered into a PLEA DEAL with Calvert County States Attorney Laura Martin and in exchange for a guilty plea on Nov. 9, 2016, he was sentenced to 120 days in jail and no fine.

Morris was charged with DUI on April 19, 2004, at 1:06 am by St. Mary’s Sheriff’s Deputy William Ray when he was stopped on Hermanville Road at Rt. 235 in Hermanville, Md. Represented by attorney David Densford, who is now a Judge, a plea deal was struck with St. Mary’s States Attorney Richard Fritz on Aug. 10, 2004, Morris was sentenced to sixty days in jail with fifty days suspended.

Geezer went for his knife when troopers went for ticket book and DUI test

HOLLYWOOD, MD. – When a Virginia geezer was stopped in a radar trap on Sunday, March 5, 2017, at 5:38 pm, Maryland State Police say he pulled a knife on two troopers. TFC B. Ditoto and Tpr. Manning were conducting a stationary radar foot stopping team on St. John’s Road at Narrow Way when they observed a vehicle traveling above the posted speed limit and flagged the vehicle over to the shoulder of the roadway.

The driver, Ned Buchanan Gilliland, 62, of Chesterfield, VA, was told to exit the vehicle to perform standardized field sobriety tests. During the Trooper’s encounter with Gilliland, he allegedly aggressively pulled a knife out of his pants pocket and swung the knife towards the troopers. A brief struggle ensued, Gilliland was placed on the ground and arrested. Gilliland was transported to the St. Mary’s County Detention Center and charged with First Degree Assault, Second Degree Assault, Fail to Obey a Lawful Order, and Resisting Arrest. He was held pending a bond review with the District Court Commissioner. Gilliland, of 6213 Riddle Court, Chesterfield, Virginia, is represented by attorney Joseph Vallario and faces a trial in District Court on April 4, 2017. He was released from jail on March 6, 2017, after posting bond.

Eric Cooks up better deal than buying tags from MVA; cops says he stole them

CALIFORNIA, MD. – The lines can be long at the MVA and the prices to buy tags can be high, thus stealing tags is one option. Police say that on Thursday, March 9, 2017, at 2:34 pm, TFC C. Ditoto initiated a traffic stop on a black passenger car in the area of Route 235 and First Colony Blvd. A check of the registration plates on the vehicle revealed that they had been reported stolen on March 1, 2017. The driver, Eric Denon Cooks, 46, of Indian Head, was placed under arrest and transported to the Maryland State Police Leonardtown Barrack for processing. He was charged with Theft Less than $100 on a criminal citation and released.

GREAT MILLS, MD. – They have been together for many moons, and now they are alleged to have been cracking corn with crack cocaine just like old times. Police say that on Thursday, March 9, 2017, at 8:05 pm, TFC C. Ditoto initiated a traffic stop on a passenger car in the 21000 block of Great Mills Road. A K9 scan was conducted, resulting in a positive alert. TFC C. Ditoto conducted a search of the vehicle and its occupants. The search revealed suspected crack cocaine in the vehicle. The driver, Xavier Gabriel Cassagnol, 57, and the passenger, Robin Ann Laabs, 45, both of Great Mills, were placed under arrest and transported to the St. Mary’s County Detention Center. They were charged with CDS: Possess Not Marijuana and held pending a bond review with the District Court Commissioner.
Laabs entered a guilty plea to prostitution on Oct. 14, 2005, in a plea deal with St. Mary’s States Attorney Richard Fritz. In exchange for a guilty plea, she was given one year in jail with all but fifteen days suspended and credit given for all that time already served. Being a long-time drug addict and hooker, Laabs would benefit from treatment during a lengthy stay in jail, but the public defenders will likely keep her on the streets when she comes up for a violation of probation hearing in April of 2017.
