Michael M. McCarraher took his turn too wide; was nearly three times the legal limit in DUI arrest

MSP choose a sober driverPossession of Marijuana:  On November 11, 2014, at approximately 1312 hours, troopers assigned to the Berlin Barrack stopped a Ford truck as the driver was not wearing his seatbelt.  Upon making contact with the driver, identified as Richard Stacey Gulan, troopers could detect an odor of marijuana emanating from the vehicle.  Gulan was asked about the marijuana, and he did in fact indicate there was marijuana in the vehicle.  The marijuana was subsequently located, and it weighed 21.9 grams.  Gulan was arrested and taken before a District Court Commissioner before being released on his own recognizance.

DUI-Related Collision:  On November 6, 2014 at approximately 1613 hours, Michael M. McCarraher was driving a 1994 Jeep Wrangler north along MD Route 589 when he attempted to turn onto Beauchamp Road.  McCarraher was not able to properly turn (turned wide) and struck the driver’s side door of a 2010 Nissan Rogue stopped on Beauchamp Road at the intersection awaiting for the traffic light to change.  McCarraher was deemed to be impaired and subsequently arrested.  He submitted to an evidentiary breath test with a result of 0.19 grams of alcohol.  There were no injuries in the collision.

Fatal Collision:  On November 6, 2014 at approximately 0807 hours, troopers from the Maryland State Police Berlin Barrack responded to eastbound U.S. Route 50 at Maryland Route 346, Berlin, Worcester County for a report of a motor vehicle collision.  Preliminary investigation suggested a Volvo, driven by Donna Clarke of Berlin, was attempting to cross over eastbound U.S. Route 50 from MD Route 346.  A Mazda, driven by Lauren King of Salisbury, was traveling along eastbound US Route 50 and collided with the Volvo.    Both parties were transported to the hospital for injuries suffered in the collision.  Upon arriving at Atlantic General Hospital in Berlin, the driver of the Volva, Donna Clarke, died as a result of her injuries.  The collision still remains under investigation by the Maryland State Police Reconstruction Team.

DUI-Related Collision:  On November 1, 2014 at approximately 0202 hrs, troopers responded to MD Route 90 and Ocean Parkway for a reported single vehicle collision.  Through the investigation it was determined Nicholas Thompson-Riviere of Bishopville, Maryland, was driving westbound along MD Route 90 when he lost control.  The vehicle he was driving left the right roadside, struck a guardrail and then struck a tree.   The vehicle was destroyed and Thompson-Riviere had to be extricated from the wreckage, and he was taken to PRMC in Salisbury for injuries.  Troopers noted an odor of an alcoholic beverage emanating from Thompson-Riviere, and he was subsequently charged with DUI.  Troopers want to remind drivers not to drink and drive, and if you notice a vehicle being driven erratically to notify the Berlin Barrack at 410-641-3101 or dial #77 from your cell phone.  Stopping an impaired driver could save a life.
