Boaters have always visited Drift Inn on the Patuxent by water. The day after Isabel hit, they could float right into the dining room or the float-in window.
The Wicomico River, off of the Potomac River, took a direct hit as the hurricane crossed Virginia. This view is of Quade’s Store at Bushwood Wharf. The store, shown at right, is built high off the water and suffered little damage.
High tide in Compton, Md., where the famous restaurant Fitzie’s Marina was wrecked in 2003 by Hurricane Isabel. The business was rebuilt.
The covered slips of Combs Creek Marina in Compton were uncovered by the winds of Isabel.
St. Patrick’s Creek Campground and Marina was ripped apart and boats shoved on shore in the 2003 visit from Isabel.
Many waterfront homes in the Chesapeake Bay region had a lot more water than before the storm struck.
Swamps became creeks with a nine-foot storm surge.
Some areas were hit hard while others nearby weren’t affected by the direction of the wind.
When the water receded, many piers and seawalls were not damaged, while others were wrecked.
