DELAWARE STATE POLICE BEAT / Unstable load of Wedding Partiers dumped as Jolly Trolley began to Sway and Overturned
Dewey Beach, Delaware – What causes any trailer to overturn due to it swaying? What causes wedding partiers to sway? What music was playing inside the Jolly Trolly as it cruised down the highway? Answers to these questions and more will be forthcoming from the Delaware State Police. The Delaware State Police are investigating a crash involving a Jolly Trolley that occurred on Oct. 1, 2016, south of Dewey Beach.
Preliminary investigation indicates the crash occurred around 4:41 p.m., October 1, 2016, as a 76-year-old Lewes man was operating a 2005 Ford Econo Van pulling the Jolly Trolley with approximately 22 passengers (wedding guests) on board the trolley. For an undetermined reason, the trailer started to sway and then overturn in the southbound lanes of SR1 south of Dewey Beach.
Police say the van immediately stopped and bystanders in the area began assisting pulling the passengers from the trolley. At least 12 people were transported by Sussex County EMS to area hospitals where they were treated for non-life-threatening injuries. The operator of the van was uninjured.
SR1 southbound was closed for approximately two hours while the crash was investigated and cleared. No citations were issued and the crash remains under investigation.
The Jolly Trolley posted this statement on their website:
“There appear to be no serious injuries but today the Jolly trolley has had its first real accident in the 23 years of carrying millions of people.
Our hearts go out to those injured and affected by this accident as the investigation continues to find out exactly what happened. There are many facts to discover before we can make any accurate statements.
Again, it appears that there are no serious injuries, weather may have been a factor, and our hearts go out to all affected by this accident. Thank you.”
