Maryland State Police continue to investigate a crash in Carroll County yesterday which resulted in charges against a Howard County man whose mother was injured as a result of the incident.
The accused is identified as Devin Harbison, 18, of 1415 Chessie Court, Mount Airy, Maryland. Harbison was seated in the front passenger seat at the time of the incident. After consultation with the Carroll County State’s Attorney, he has been charged with attempted second-degree murder, 1st and 2nd-degree assault and reckless endangerment. He is being held at Carroll County Central Booking awaiting an initial appearance before a court commissioner.
The victim is identified Susan Harbison, 51, of Mount. Airy, Md. Police say she was the operator of the vehicle at the time of the crash. She is the mother of Devin Harbison. Susan was flown to the R Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center for medical treatment.
Maryland State Police report that on Aug. 26, 2016, at 11:30 a.m., Susan Harbison was operating a blue Honda sedan, traveling northbound on Maryland Route 27, in the area of Braddock Road in Mt. Airy. Police say that Devin was in the front seat and the only passenger in the vehicle.
Police believe the mother and son were arguing when Devin intentionally grabbed the steering wheel and pulled it to the right, causing the Honda to fly off the road. The Honda traveled into the front yard of a residence in the 4300 block of Ridge Road in Mt. Airy. Several fixtures in the front yard were damaged including a basketball hoop, a tree and other debris stacked against the house. The vehicle came to rest against the debris at the front of the attached garage portion of the home.
Troopers from the Westminster Barrack responded to the scene. Sheriff deputies from the Carroll County Sheriff’s Office and emergency medical providers from the Winfield Fire Department also responded to assist. Susan was flown by State Police medevac to Shock Trauma. Devin was transported by ambulance to Carroll Hospital Center.
Police urge anyone with information regarding this incident to call the Westminster Barrack at 410-386-3000. Calls may remain confidential.
Maryland Court records show that Devin may have been in a continuous argument with his mother due to a criminal charge of assault filed against him in Carroll County District Court on July 27, 2016. The charges were placed by Maryland State Police Trooper Barry and witnessed by two other troopers.
Devin Parker Harbison was jailed on Aug. 27, 2016 and released on bail the same day, perhaps so he can visit his mother in the trauma center.
