Two St. Charles City deputies collided while responding to a call with lights and sirens

CHARLES CITY CO., Va. – Two Charles City County Sheriff’s Office sworn personnel are recovering from injuries sustained in a two-vehicle crash Wednesday afternoon. The traffic crash occurred at 1:26 p.m., on Route 5 just west of Glebe Lane in Charles City County as police were pursuing a vehicle which later crashed with the driver escaping.

The Virginia State Police Crash Reconstruction Teams are investigating the crash.

A 2011 Dodge Charger, belonging to the Charles City County Sheriff’s Office, was westbound on Route 5 with its emergency equipment activated. A 2005 Crown Victoria, also belonging to the Charles City County Sheriff’s Office, pulled out from a service station with its emergency equipment activated and the two vehicles collided on Route 5.

The impact of the crash forced the Charger off the right side of the road where it struck a 2012 Genesis that had pulled off the road to yield to the oncoming police vehicles. The Charger then overturned and came to rest partially in the roadway.

Both Sheriff’s Office personnel were transported via State Police Med-Flight to VCU Medical Center for treatment of serious but non-life threatening injuries.

The crash remains under investigation.
