Chief Paul Bernat stated: “We have provided extra patrols, we have positioned our officers and arranged their work schedules to combat criminal activity, and we continue to conduct community outreach activities in our high-crime areas. The charges follow an eight-month investigation by CGIS revealing that Petty Officer Clifft allegedly committed a sexual act, while off duty, upon the reporting victim without consent in July 2014, and allegedly assaulted the reporting victim several times between 2011 and 2014.
In reopening the barrack, Governor Hogan fulfilled a promise made during the 2015 legislative session, and reaffirmed the administration’s commitment to making sure that the Maryland State Police remains among the most effective, trusted, and respected police force in the United States. Earlier this year, Governor Hogan also budgeted for the State Police to hire 100 new troopers, 50 of whom are currently in training.
Lyon was charged with four counts of negligent homicide under the influence. She was jailed on Oct. 31, 2015 and released from jail on Nov. 1, 2015 on $200,000 property bond. She appears in court in January.
