For unknown reasons, Beard, operating a Chrysler Sebring, was traveling southbound on Interstate 95 when he crossed the travel lanes and drove into the shoulder. He struck the concrete barrier wall and traveled almost 200 feet along the southbound shoulder before striking the Ford F-150 and Fajardo who was standing on the shoulder at the rear of the pickup truck.

The fire was discovered by an employee at a nearby business establishment, and 911 was alerted shortly after. Fire departments from around the region assisted Chestertown Vol. Fire Department and were dispatched to the fire at 7:53 pm. The fire was controlled in about 2 ½ hours by over eighty firefighters who responded to the four alarm fire. Four firefighters sustained minor illness and injuries during fire suppression; all have been treated and released from medical attention.
In this incident it is alleged that Mancia lost control of his vehicle on Pemberton Drive causing it to flip over. Upon the arrival of the deputy to the overturned vehicle, Mancia had left the scene. Approximately two hours later Mancia turned up at PRMC at which point the deputy met with him and determined that Mancia appeared to be under the influence of alcohol.
