Hare admitted that after robbing the tellers in the lobby, Hare found a bank employee who had locked herself in a back room of the bank. Hare forced open the locked door and demanded her car keys and her purse. The employee gave Hare her purse, which contained cash and personal effects, and the keys to her car, a 2007 Kia Spectra, which was parked in the bank’s parking lot.
Shortly after the murder, the carjacked vehicle was spotted, and Smithwick and Holmes led officers on a high-speed chase that ended near Alabama Avenue and 32nd Place SE. Holmes and Smithwick were both immediately arrested.

Police say as the suspects fled out the rear door, one of the victims, a 22-year-old man of Dumfries, followed and confronted one of the suspects. During the encounter, a struggle ensued and the victim sustained a laceration to his leg before the suspect fled on foot.
