ALBEMARLE COUNTY, VA. — Virginia State Police have not released the name of one motorist who was struck by Winston Smith II, the driver of a pickup which was operating in the wrong direction on I-64 after several reports of a lunatic in a pickup were called into police. Smith killed Read Mountain Fire & Rescue EMT Beth Franklin in the crash and he took his last curtain call. 

At 6:04 a.m., Sunday (July 16, 2017), Virginia State Police were notified of a green pickup truck driving recklessly in the westbound lanes of Interstate 64 in Albemarle County. Several minutes later, a second report was called in about a green pickup truck in the Emergency Vehicle Crossover in the I-64 median. As state police were responding, the pickup truck drove through the crossover and began driving the wrong way in the eastbound lanes of I-64.

At 6:09 a.m., state police were notified of a head-on collision in the eastbound lanes of I-64 at the 114-mile marker in Albemarle County.

The driver of the Isuzu, Winston J. Smith II, 32, of Staunton, Va., died at the scene. He was wearing a seatbelt.

The driver of the Hyundai, Bethany M. Franklin, 30, of Troutville, Va., died at the scene. She was wearing a seatbelt.

The adult male driver of the F150 pickup was transported to UVA Hospital for the treatment of minor injuries. Police say that their investigation into this crash continues.

Smith’s driving record in Staunton includes citations for failing to have a vehicle inspected, speeding, not having a county or city tag, driving on a suspended license, operating an uninsured vehicle, following too closely and failing to pay parking tickets.

Smith was also cited for operating an uninspected vehicle in Waynesboro District Court.

What a sad and tragic day for the Read Mountain Fire and Rescue family. The family gets one member fewer. Bethany Franklin was a great, hard working young lady who was starting to reach her goals. Her sudden death is senseless and sad.
