<p><span style="font-size: 12pt;">VIRGINIA BEACH, VA. &#8212; Virginia Beach Police report that on Friday, May 19, 2017, a box truck delivery driver lost control of his truck, and smashed into a small SUV, killing one teen and critically injuring another.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 12pt;">According to Virginia Beach Police spokesperson A. L. Perry, Jerode Demetrius Johnson, 31, of Norfolk has been charged with involuntary manslaughter, maiming as a result of DUI, felony hit and run resulting in a death, DUI 1st offense and driving on a suspended operator&#8217;s license. Further charges are still pending and the case remains under active investigation with MPO T. Schutz of the Fatal Accident Crash Team as the lead investigator.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 12pt;">Police say that on May 19, 2017, at approximately 3:19 p.m., Emergency communications received a call for service in the 2400 block of Indian River Road regarding a two-vehicle accident. A preliminary investigation has revealed an adult male driving a delivery box truck was traveling eastbound on Indian River Road. The delivery truck driver lost control, over-corrected, crossed the center line and struck a small SUV traveling westbound. The SUV was occupied by two adult females.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 12pt;">The SUV driver suffered critical injuries during this accident and succumbed to her wounds. The SUV passenger suffered critical injuries and was transported to a local hospital for treatment. Presently, she is listed in critical condition. The driver of the delivery truck suffered a minor injury and didn&#8217;t require additional treatment. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 12pt;">The delivery truck driver was placed in custody and transported to the Virginia Beach Central Jail. </span></p>

<h4>The Virginia-Pilot reports that Johnson had a criminal and traffic record going back several years:</h4>
<p><span style="font-size: 12pt;">In 2015, Johnson was arrested and accused of firing a gun in public while he was drunk in Chesapeake.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 12pt;">He was found guilty in July 2015 of shooting a gun in public, carrying a concealed weapon, possessing a controlled substance and being drunk in public. In all, Johnson was sentenced to 390 days in jail and six years unsupervised probation.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 12pt;">Of that active sentence, all but 8 days was suspended.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 12pt;">He was also found guilty of indecent exposure in Chesapeake in 2009.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 12pt;">Court records from Norfolk and Virginia Beach list more several vehicle-related infractions, including speeding, failure to yield and defective vehicle equipment.</span></p>
