VIRGINIA BEACH, VA. — Virginia Beach Police report that on Friday, May 19, 2017, a box truck delivery driver lost control of his truck, and smashed into a small SUV, killing one teen and critically injuring another.

According to Virginia Beach Police spokesperson A. L. Perry, Jerode Demetrius Johnson, 31, of Norfolk has been charged with involuntary manslaughter, maiming as a result of DUI, felony hit and run resulting in a death, DUI 1st offense and driving on a suspended operator’s license.  Further charges are still pending and the case remains under active investigation with MPO T. Schutz of the Fatal Accident Crash Team as the lead investigator.

Police say that on May 19, 2017, at approximately 3:19 p.m., Emergency communications received a call for service in the 2400 block of Indian River Road regarding a two-vehicle accident.  A preliminary investigation has revealed an adult male driving a delivery box truck was traveling eastbound on Indian River Road.  The delivery truck driver lost control, over-corrected, crossed the center line and struck a small SUV traveling westbound.  The SUV was occupied by two adult females.

The SUV driver suffered critical injuries during this accident and succumbed to her wounds.  The SUV passenger suffered critical injuries and was transported to a local hospital for treatment. Presently, she is listed in critical condition.   The driver of the delivery truck suffered a minor injury and didn’t require additional treatment. 

The delivery truck driver was placed in custody and transported to the Virginia Beach Central Jail.

The Virginia-Pilot reports that Johnson had a criminal and traffic record going back several years:

In 2015, Johnson was arrested and accused of firing a gun in public while he was drunk in Chesapeake.

He was found guilty in July 2015 of shooting a gun in public, carrying a concealed weapon, possessing a controlled substance and being drunk in public. In all, Johnson was sentenced to 390 days in jail and six years unsupervised probation.

Of that active sentence, all but 8 days was suspended.

He was also found guilty of indecent exposure in Chesapeake in 2009.

Court records from Norfolk and Virginia Beach list more several vehicle-related infractions, including speeding, failure to yield and defective vehicle equipment.
