Speeding motorcyclist Nicholas Moulthrop killed in crash; was cited for speeding 4 times in 2014
SYKESVILLE, MD. — A man who had been ticketed four times last year for speeding in Maryland was reportedly speeding at a high rate on Rt. 32 in Sykesville, Md., when police say he slammed into another vehicle, killing himself and injuring another driver.
Howard County Police say that the collision occurred on Tuesday, May 12, at approximately 5:08pm. A 2015 Kawasaki Ninja 1000 motorcycle was traveling southbound Route 32, in the area of Livestock Road, when it collided with a 2010 Jeep Liberty. The Jeep was making a left turn onto northbound Route 32 from eastbound Livestock Road when the collision occurred.
The driver of the Kawasaki motorcycle was identified as 30 year old Nicholas Richard Moulthrop of Sykesville, MD. Moulthrop was pronounced dead at the scene.
The driver of the Jeep was identified as 65 year old Stuart Mark Stein of Gwynn Oak, MD. Stein was transported to Howard County General Hospital and is currently listed in stable condition.
Preliminary investigation and witness accounts revealed the Kawasaki was traveling at a high rate of speed just prior to the collision.
Route 32, between Route 99 and Interstate 70, was closed for approximately four hours with the assistance of the Maryland State Highway Administration CHART team.
Moulthrop was ticketed for speeding on Rt. 40 at Tyson Road on Oct. 25, 2014 by Howard County Police Officer C. Reed and was set to appear in court on May 14, 2015.
Moulthrop was ticketed for speeding on Rt. 32, the same highway on which he died, on Oct. 3, 2014 at 1:28 am by Howard County Police Officer Matthew Kurtz. Moulthrop entered a guilty plea on April 8, 2015 in Howard County District Court and was fined $160.
Moulthrop was ticketed for speeding on Aug. 29, 2014 in Garrett County, Md., by Maryland State Trooper D. Delauter while operating his death bike, the 2014 Kawasaki on Rt. 219 northbound. In a plea deal in Garrett County District Court he entered a guilty plea and was given Probation before Judgment and fined $200.
Moulthrop was ticketed for speeding on June 2, 2014 on Rt. 50 at Inlet Isle by Maryland State Trooper t. Weathers and in Worcester County District Court on Sept. 4, 2014 he was given a plea deal by the States Attorney in exchange for his guilty plea. He was given Probation before Judgment and fined $90.
