Drugs Cash and Loaded Handgun Land Akeem Coston and Darius Barrett in Slammer

WILMINGTON, DEL. — Wilmington Police report that on February 24, 2015 officers from Operation Safe Streets conducted a motor vehicle stop in the 1000 block of W.4th Street. As officers were conducting their investigation into the vehicle and its occupants, they detected a strong odor of marijuana emanating from the vehicle.

The occupants who were identified as Akeem Coston, 20, of Wilmington and Darius Barrett, 21, of Wilmington. Both individuals were found to have active warrants from various courts and were placed into custody without incident.  Located on defendant Coston incident to arrest were marijuana and heroin. Located on defendant Barrett was an amount of packaged marijuana, and $1800.00 in cash. A further investigation into the vehicle revealed a Mossberg International .22 sub tech handgun, loaded with (13) rounds of ammunition, and an additional (72) .22 caliber rounds of ammunition in the vehicle. Coston was booked on the following charges: Possession of a Firearm by a Person Prohibited, Possession of Ammunition by a Person Prohibited, Carrying a Concealed Deadly Weapon, Possession of Marijuana, and Possession of Heroin.  Barrett was booked on the same charges except for the Possession of Heroin. The total amount of heroin seized was .27 grams, and the total Marijuana seized was 38.1 grams.

Both defendants were committed to the Howard Young Correctional Facility in lieu of bail. Bail for Coston (white t-shirt) was set at $7500 secured, and Barrett (plaid shirt) $40,000 cash.
