Fatal Pedestrian Crash Involving Police Cruiser

FRANCONIA, VA. — Fairfax County Police report that a man who walked out into the path of traffic against a light was killed on April 2, 2016.

Police say that an officer was involved in the fatal pedestrian crash on Saturday, April 2 around 11 p.m. An investigation determined the officer was traveling northbound on Beulah Street near Old Beulah Street; the traffic signal was green. As he approached the intersection, a 26-year-old man stepped into the roadway, against the green light. Unable to avoid a collision, the police cruiser struck the pedestrian.

The officer immediately stopped, reported the incident to dispatch and requested an ambulance to respond. The man was transported to the Inova Franconia-Springfield HealthPlex with life-threatening injuries. He succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead at 11:44 p.m. The officer did not require medical attention.

Police supervisors, detectives from the Crash Reconstruction Unit, Internal Affairs Bureau and the Criminal Investigation Bureau responded and are conducting a thorough investigation. The investigation will determine whether factors such as speed or alcohol contributed to the crash, fault and if charges are appropriate.
