The Chesapeake Today June front pageSILVER SPRING, MD.  — With the fresh blood of his victim still dripping from his hands, the suspect in the stabbing death of a Silver Spring teenager was caught – red blooded handed — say police. 

Detectives from the Montgomery County Police-Major Crimes Division are investigating a homicide that occurred yesterday in the Briggs Chaney area of the county.  Mitchell Zio, 19, of the 1500 block of Heather Hollow Circle in (the White Oak area) of Silver Spring, has been arrested and charged with second degree murder.

On June 10, 2015 at approximately 3:29 p.m., the Emergency Communications Center received multiple calls for a stabbing in the 14100 block of Castle Boulevard.  Officers from the 3rd District and Montgomery County Fire/Rescue Personnel responded to the area. The male victim, identified as Derik Benson, 18, of Castle Boulevard, was lying on his back and appeared to be suffering from a stab wound.  Benson was transported to a local hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.

A description of the suspect was provided to officers via the police radio.  Officers located and arrested the suspect, now identified as Zio, as he attempted to flee the area.  Zio had blood on his person and a bloody knife was also recovered from Zio.

Investigation indicates that the victim and suspect were known to each other.

Zio was transported to the Central Processing Unit and was charged with second degree murder.
