The vehicle approached the bicycle from the rear and struck the bicycle’s rear tire which caused the victim to be ejected and come to rest on the grassy shoulder along the southbound lane. The dark sedan fled the scene in a southern direction.
The operator failed to negotiate the curve and traveled off the south side of the roadway down an embankment and struck a utility pole with the driver’s side door. The Jeep continued westbound overturning and ejecting the right front passenger before coming to a stop on the passenger side.
The operator of the Volkswagen Passat sustained serious injuries, and it is unknown if he was properly restrained. He was declared deceased at the collision scene.

The incident occurred around 4:00 p.m. this afternoon as Alfred E. Cochran, 75 of Ocean City, MD, was operating a 2007 Honda Accord eastbound on Gum Road just east of Pepper Road. As the Accord entered into a slight left curve, at an apparent high rate of speed, the vehicle drove off the south edge of the road and struck a culvert pipe causing it to vault into the air.
