ARREST MADE IN MURDER OF MATTHEW ORTEGA

Sully Police District – Homicide detectives identified and arrested a suspect in the murder of 17-year-old Matthew Ortega on February 14 in Centreville. Around 1 this afternoon, 18-year-old Uriel Josaphat Espinosa Cruz, of Fairfax, was arrested for murder and use of a firearm in the commission of a felony. He is being held at the Adult Detention Center without bond. Detectives do not believe this to be a random incident.

UPDATE: CAUSE OF DEATH REVEALED

The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner has ruled that 17-year-old homicide victim Matthew Ortega died of a single gunshot wound to the upper body. His body was found by a delivery driver in the 13500 block of Jeb Stuart Square in Centreville on February 14.

CENTREVILLE, VA.  – Fairfax County Police report that homicide detectives were able to confirm the identity of the body found in Centreville on Wednesday as 17-year-old Matthew Brian Ortega, during an autopsy at the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner.

The autopsy results are pending. Due to the ongoing criminal investigation, at this point, police are only confirming Ortega died as a result of trauma to the upper body.

At 5:17 am on Feb. 14, 2018, Fairfax County Police officers responded to the area after a delivery driver saw a body lying in the street with upper body trauma. Medics arrived and pronounced him dead at the scene. No weapons were found at the scene.

With a heavy broken heart, I am saddened to update you all that the victim was identified as 17-year-old Matthew Ortega, Son, brother, uncle and very loved by many. We ask you all to keep us in your prayers but especially keep the Ortega family in your thoughts as well in your prayers. We respectfully ask for space to allow the family to grieve peacefully. Please do not directly contact them with questions as this is hard enough. Victor and I are the main points of contact but we will also respectfully ask for time to grieve in peace. This is really hard and unexpected for all of us. We thank you in advance for your understanding and cooperation will be updating you all for funeral arrangements. 
We appreciate all the help we can get as to this was so unexpected that the family isn’t able to come up with all the expenses. Again we thank you in advance. God bless you all.
