DWI HIT PARADE: The perfect storm of JR Ednie jaywalking in front of DUI driver Stanley Faison ended in death

OCEAN CITY, MD. May 21, 2017— Driving drunk in Ocean City presents a special challenge as drunk and dumb pedestrians roll onto Coastal Highway like cattle with little regard for traffic. Ocean City Police report that a Pennsylvania man in the resort town for a good time, had his last walk on the wild side when he waltzed into traffic at about 2:24 am.

The fatal stroll for James R. Ednie, 23, of Kelton, Pennsylvania was met with a vehicle operated by a Waldorf, Maryland, man who police placed under arrest for driving while impaired.

Police report that Ednie was not in a crosswalk not far from the intersection of 45th Street and Coastal Highway in spite of a well-publicized effort aimed at pedestrians to use crosswalks.

Police report that Ednie was not in a crosswalk not far from the intersection of 45th Street and Coastal Highway in spite of a well-publicized effort aimed at pedestrians to use crosswalks. Ednie was crossing Coastal Highway from west to east near the intersection of 45th Street and Coastal Highway. The vehicle that struck the pedestrian was traveling northbound on Coastal Highway at the time of the collision.

Lifesaving efforts were initiated by Good Samaritans at the scene and continued by police and Ocean City EMS. Police say Ednie was transported to Atlantic General Hospital where he was pronounced deceased. The Office of the Medical Examiner of Maryland will conduct a blood alcohol test on Ednie’s body to determine if he was also under the influence of drugs and or alcohol.

The driver of the vehicle, identified as Stanley J. Faison, 50, of 514 University Drive, Waldorf, Md., was arrested and has been charged with driving under the influence of alcohol and multiple other traffic related charges.

Faison is currently being held at the Ocean City Public Safety Building pending an initial appearance before a Maryland District Court Commissioner.

A petition on Change.org was begun to convince the Worcester County Circuit Court Judge to deny parole to Diogo Facchini for killing Matthew Cheswick as he drove at three times the legal limit and was convicted of DUI homicide as well as hit and run. After serving but eight months, Facchini was eligible for parole. Over three thousand signatures were presented to the Judge and the parole was denied.

This report is from Carl Braun who started a petition on Change.org: Dec 22, 2013 — The drunk driver that killed my best friend Matthew Cheswick was ordered to serve his full sentence on October 31. The petition was created when we found out he was up for parole after serving barely a year of a five-year sentence, FOR MURDER. Facchini was 3 times the legal limit when he hit Matthew at 65 mph in a 35. He kept on driving. Luckily witnesses stopped him and identified him. The petition spread like wildfire when I made it, as everyone felt the same as me. It was presented in court and Matthew’s parents told me it had a huge influence on the decision to keep Facchini behind bars.

Ocean City Police reported on Monday, May 28, 2012, at approximately 1:20 a.m., a Virginia man struck a pedestrian as he zoomed up Coastal Highway in the bus lane and fled the scene.

Ocean City Police responded to the area of 54th Street and Coastal Highway, in reference to a hit and run involving a pedestrian. The pedestrian, a 22-year-old man from Cooksville, MD, was attempting to cross Coastal Highway from west to east when he was struck by an Isuzu Rodeo traveling northbound in the bus lane.

After striking the victim, the driver of the Isuzu, who was later identified as Diogo Miller Facchini, 30, of Lorton, VA, continued to travel north on Coastal Highway. Facchini proceeded to travel east on 55th Street where witnesses followed his vehicle until he was apprehended by the police.

The preliminary investigation revealed that Facchini was traveling at a speed exceeding the posted speed limit when he struck the victim, who was identified as Mathew Jude Cheswick. Cheswick was taken to Peninsula Regional Medical Center, where he was later pronounced deceased.

Facchini, who was not injured during the collision, was arrested and charged with homicide by a motor vehicle while intoxicated, leaving the scene of a fatal collision, driving under the influence of alcohol, driving while impaired by alcohol and a number of other traffic related charges. At the time of this release, Facchini was awaiting an initial appearance in front of an Ocean City District Court Commissioner.
