CALEXICO, Calif. – El Centro Sector Border Patrol agents on Saturday arrested a previously deported gang member and a man suspected of methamphetamine smuggling on Saturday in two separate events.

The first arrest occurred at 4:25 p.m., when U.S. Border Patrol agents assigned to the Calexico Station were on patrol and detected a man is making an illegal entry into the United States approximately 25 miles east of the Calexico West Port of Entry.

Agents arrested the man and transported him to the Calexico Border Patrol station for processing.  There, agents identified the man as David Ernesto Pacheco.  Agents also discovered Pacheco was a member of the notorious “MS-13” criminal gang.

The man, a 44-year-old citizen of El Salvador, will be held at Imperial County Jail and prosecuted for his illegal entry into the United States as a previously removed felon.

The second arrest occurred, at approximately 4:30 p.m., when a 36-year-old man approached the Highway 86 checkpoint driving a blue Chevrolet Malibu.

A Border Patrol detection canine alerted to the vehicle.  Agents referred the man to the secondary inspection area for a closer examination.  After an intensive search, agents discovered 18 vacuum sealed bundles of methamphetamine hidden inside the vehicle’s rocker panels.Agents found more than 38 pounds of meth in car at Border Patrol checkpoint.

The methamphetamine had a combined weight of 38.12 pounds with an estimated street value of $381,200.

The man, a Lawfully Admitted Permanent Resident from Mexico, the vehicle, and narcotics, were turned over to the Drug Enforcement Administration for further investigation.

From October 1, 2014, through August 31, 2015, El Centro Sector had 14,511 apprehensions and seized more than 445 pounds of methamphetamine.
