Charles County Sheriff Troy Berry reports that the father of James Robert Barker apparently shot himself, two days before Father’s Day, in what police believe was a case of suicide. The man left his baby alone and the child died. What police did not say was whether they were investigating if the man was responsible for the baby’s death prior to taking his own life.

The neighbors found an infant not breathing and began CPR while waiting for EMT and police.

Charles County detectives report that a 32-year-old man shot and killed himself in an upstairs bedroom of his house; his 3-month-old son, James Robert Barker, was found unconscious nearby. The baby was transported to a hospital where he died on June 21.

The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Washington, D.C. will perform an autopsy to determine the manner and cause of the infant’s death, say police. The investigation is continuing. Anyone with additional information is asked to call Det. J. Austin at (301) 609-6504.

Officers recovered a gun near the dead man.
