<p>ISLE OF WIGHT, VA. &#8212; A police officer was shot in the foot by another officer who was attempting to kill an attacking dog during a raid on a residence in Isle of Wight, Va. The Sheriff of Isle of Wight has now reported that officer who shot the other officer was not one of his deputies, leaving the only possible officer to be a Virginia State Police Officer. The Virginia State Police did not release the information of the shooter in their initial report.</p>

Tommy Porter of the Isle of Wight Sheriff&#8217;s Office, on February 12, 2015, the Isle of Wight County Sheriff’s Office along with the Virginia State Police Tactical Team, executed a Search Warrant on a residence in the 8700 block of Smithfield Apartments Lane. During the service of that search warrant a dog attacked one of the State Police Team members and the dog was fatally wounded. No Isle of Wight County Units discharged their weapons during the execution of this search warrant. The Search Warrant was the culmination of an ongoing narcotics investigation by the Meherrin Drug Task Force. As a result, the following 3 subjects were arrested and charged with:</p>
<p>Gershon Green, Age 30, of the 8700 block of Smithfield Apts. Lane, Smithfield, was charged with 3 Felonies and 1 Misdemeanor:<br />
• PWID Heroin<br />
• PWID Imitation Cocaine<br />
• Possess Ammunition by a Convicted Felon<br />
• Possession of Marijuana</p>
<p>Derrick L. Delk, Age 21, of the 5000 block of James Way, Smithfield, was charged with 2 Felonies:<br />
• Possession of a Schedule 3 Narcotic<br />
• PWID Marijuana</p>
<p>Direka S. Towns, Age 31, of the 8700 block of Smithfield Apts. Lane, Smithfield, was charged with 3 Felonies and 1 Misdemeanor:<br />
• PWID Marijuana<br />
• PWID of Schedule 1 or 2 Narcotic<br />
• Possession of a Schedule 3 Narcotic<br />
• Possession of a Firearm by a Convicted Felon</p>
<p>There are also 4 warrants on file for Patrick Simmons, Age 27, address unknown.</p>

<p>Sgt. Michelle Anaya reports that on Thursday, Feb 12th 2015, at approximately 6:15 a.m., Virginia State Police was conducting a joint police operation with the Isle of Wight County Sheriff’s Department on an on-going investigation. During the course of the investigation, a dog attacked one of the team members during entry into a residence. A team member discharged their weapon on the attacking dog and one of the rounds struck another team member in the foot. The team member suffered a non-life threatening injury and was taken to the hospital and was treated and released.</p>
<p>Sgt. Michelle Anaya of the Virginia State Police didn’t identify the agency or name of the officers who fired and received the unintended gunshot or reveal if the dog was subsequently killed or captured.</p>

<p>On February 7, 2014 the Isle of Wight County Sheriff’s Office participated in the Polar Plunge to benefit Virginia’s Special Olympics. The 2 day event was held in Virginia Beach.</p>
<p>The goal for the team this year was to raise $1,000.00 and they more than exceeded that by raising a total of $1,785.00. This is the 2nd year the Sheriff’s Office has participated in the Polar Plunge.</p>
<p>The men and women of the Sheriff’s Office participate in several Special Olympics events throughout the year including the Law Enforcement Torch Run in June. They are also involved in the Special Olympics Games in Richmond, VA, supporting and encouraging the athletes.</p>
