<h2>MURDER USA Ryan Matthews sentenced to eight years in prison; attempted murder of sailor Zane Kentner on DC street</h2>
<p><span style="font-size: 12pt;"> WASHINGTON, D.C. – Ryan Demetric Matthews, 28, of Northwest Washington, D.C., was sentenced on Jan. 6, 2017, to eight years in prison on charges stemming from an incident in which he shot one person and assaulted two others in downtown Washington, U.S. Attorney Channing D. Phillips announced.</span></p>

<p><span style="font-size: 12pt;">Matthews pled guilty in October 2016, in the Superior Court of the District of Columbia to one count of assault with intent to kill, one count of possession of a firearm during a crime of violence, and two counts of assault. He was sentenced by the Honorable Michael Ryan.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 12pt;"> According to the government’s evidence, on Sept. 10, 2016, at about 3:15 a.m., Matthews approached a complete stranger in the 1300 block of Connecticut Avenue NW and punched him in the abdomen; the victim fell to the ground. Two of the victim’s friends, who were standing nearby, confronted Matthews and asked why he had punched their friend. At this point, Matthews said words to the effect of, “Do you want a piece, too?” and swung at one of the men with his fist, striking him in the neck. A man who was nearby approached Matthews to ask about what happened and Matthews declared words to the effect of, “I guess you want to fight, too.”</span></p>

<h2>Virginia sailor shot in Washington</h2>

<p><span style="font-size: 12pt;">WASHINGTON D.C. – WAND News has learned a man from Danville serving in the United States Navy was shot in Washington D.C. early Saturday morning.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 12pt;">According to social media posts from the City of Danville, Danville High School’s Track and Field Team and other organizations, Zane Kentner, of Danville but currently living Bethesda, Maryland, was shot in a dispute outside a D.C. bar near Dupont Circle on September 10 around 3:15 AM.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 12pt;">The City of Danville confirms Kentner was a Master-at-Arms 1st Class who had been recently been presented a Navy Marine Corps Achievement Medal on September 8. He graduated from Danville High School in 2008.</span></p>
<h2>Sailor leaving going away party at Dupont Circle bar shot on street</h2>
<p><span style="font-size: 12pt;">WASHINGTON, D.C. (From Fox 5) &#8211; A sailor set to deploy overseas who was shot at his going away party early Saturday is now in critical but stable condition according to police.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 12pt;">Friends of Zane Kentner say he was shot in the chest after an altercation near bars in the 1300 block of Connecticut Avenue in Dupont Circle.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 12pt;">Naval Support Activity Bethesda confirms Kentner is based there and had just received a Navy Marine Corp Achievement Medal a few days ago.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 12pt;">D.C. Police say at around 3:20 a.m. Saturday, the gunman punched two people before shooting Kentner.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 12pt;">“After a brief foot pursuit, officers apprehended the suspect and recovered a handgun,” police said in a news release.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 12pt;">Police arrested 27-year-old Ryan Demetric Matthews of NW. He&#8217;s charged with assault with intent to kill, carrying a pistol without a license, possession of an unregistered firearm and ammunition, and two counts of simple assault.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 12pt;">On social media, some of Kentner&#8217;s family and friends have said he was an innocent bystander after a fight</span><span style="font-size: 12pt;"> a broke out, but that has not been confirmed by investigators.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 12pt;">Friends of Kentner tell FOX 5 that he was set to deploy out of the country next week and was out for a celebration with friends Friday night.</span></p>

WASHINGTON, D.C. (Fox 5) As police raced after the gunman in squad cars and on foot, reserve officer Scooter Slade rushed to help Kentner.</h4>
<p><span style="font-size: 12pt;">Officers familiar with what happened told FOX 5 that Slade was able to give Kentner medical care after Kentner&#8217;s lung collapsed, and helped save his life.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 12pt;">Slade is part of a team of 70 volunteer officers who get training that &#8220;mirrors that of a career officer,&#8221; according to D.C. police.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 12pt;">He is also a volunteer firefighter.</span></p>
