Man wanted for rape in Delaware found dead in Virginia motel room after stand-off with fugitive squad
NEWPORT NEWS, VA. — All’s well that ends well, is commonly heard when a trial is unneeded due to the final decision of a suspect to end his life. A fugitive task force was tracking down accused rapist and car thief Jawan T. Colson, 30, of Lincoln, Delaware on Jan. 7th and had pinpointed his location to a motel room in Newport News. When he barricaded himself in a motel room, the squad finally entered and found he had hung himself.
Police say that on Wednesday, January 7, 2015, members of the Department’s Fugitive Apprehension Unit and the United States Marshals Service attempted to arrest a subject wanted in Georgetown Delaware on multiple felony charges. The subject was in a room at the Midtown Motel in the 10600 block of Jefferson Avenue and refused to come out and barricaded himself in the room. At about 11:45 A.M. the Tactical Operations Unit (TOU) responded with negotiators who attempted to convince the subject to surrender peacefully. These efforts were unsuccessful resulting in the TOU deploying CS gas into the room and forcing entry into the room. Upon entry, officers found the subject unconscious. The subject was transported to a local hospital where he was pronounced deceased. He was taken to the medical examiner’s office in Norfolk for examination.
On Thursday, January 8, 2015, the medical examiner determined the cause and manner of death to be suicide by hanging.
Colson was wanted in Georgetown Delaware on three counts of rape and one count each of strangulation, unlawful sexual contact, unlawful imprisonment, theft of a motor vehicle and one count of theft under $1500.
