How did the detectives track down the killers?

Good, old-fashioned police work on the part of the detectives. Police spokeswoman Diane Richardson told NBC 4 that the detectives pondered out to find the killers who fled in the dark from a dark country road after firing multiple rounds of gunfire into another vehicle. The victims, who had come under physical assault from the car load of alleged killers, had discharged pepper spray at their assailants. The detectives tracked down videos from nearby stores and found two which showed the suspects buying bottled water at a gas station and then the two men arrested washing their eyes out in the parking lot. The cops then knew they had a lead to pursue, which led to the arrests.

Charles County Sheriff Troy Berry reports that on October 11, 2016, members of the Charles County Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigations Division arrested four people in connection with the Sept. 25, 2016, murder of Mason Cameron Atkins, 18, of Deale, Md.
A preliminary investigation showed Atkins, from Anne Arundel County, and several friends learned of an outdoor party on Mona Farm Place in La Plata and showed up uninvited.

Mona-Farm-on-National-Historic-Trust-owned-by-Michael and Margaret Mona-circa-1840-known-as-Preference.

The location of the outdoor party was a short distance from Rt. 301 near the Charles County Fairgrounds, on a rural road leading to Mona Farm.

One of the suspects pulled a handgun and fired several shots into the car, striking Atkins and his friend.

Police say that when they pulled up to the driveway where the party was being held, they were asked to leave – which they did. They drove about a half mile, heading toward the main highway when they stopped their vehicle on the side of the road.

Police say that the suspects, who were also asked to leave the area, drove by the victims and an argument ensued between the two groups. During the argument, the suspects began hitting the victims who then sprayed the suspects with pepper spray to get them away. One of the suspects pulled a handgun and fired several shots into the car, striking Atkins and his friend. The suspects fled and the victims drove to Popes Creek Road in Newburg where they called 911.

Atkins was pronounced deceased on the scene and the other victim survived. Detectives pursued leads and recovered critical evidence subsequently linking the suspects to the shooting. Investigators also served several search warrants and recovered a gun which will be examined to determine if it was the same gun used in the shooting.

The juveniles were charged as adults. All four suspects are being held at the Charles County Detention Center with no bond.
