<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><span style="font-size: 12pt;">INGLEWOOD &#8211; The coroner’s office today released the name of the man fatally wounded in Inglewood by a gunman who fled the scene.</span></h3>



<p><span style="font-size: 12pt;">The victim was 26-year-old Walter Dorsey III of Venice, said coroner’s Investigator Kristy McCracken. An autopsy was scheduled for today.</span></p>



<p><span style="font-size: 12pt;">Witnesses reporting hearing several gunshots in the area of Manchester and Crenshaw boulevards about 8:35 p.m. Thursday. They said they saw a person running away from the area.</span></p>



<p><span style="font-size: 12pt;">The victim, now identified as Dorsey, was then seen running across the street and collapsing on the sidewalk, according to the Inglewood Police Department. Officers saw the victim lying on the sidewalk, unresponsive from an apparent gunshot wound.</span></p>

<p><span style="font-size: 12pt;">The man died at a hospital about 9:15 p.m. Thursday, said coroner’s Assistant Chief Ed Winter.</span></p>



<p><span style="font-size: 12pt;">Inglewood police detectives asked anyone with any information regarding the shooting attack to call them at (310) 412-5240.</span></p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading has-text-align-center"><span style="font-size: 12pt;">The Los Angeles County Coroner&#8217;s Office, according to Dr. Augustine, now lists the death of Walter Dorsey III as a homicide from multiple gunshot wounds and states that Dorsey died at a hospital.</span></h2>

<p><span style="font-size: 12pt;">LEONARDTOWN, MD. &#8212; The grandson of two men who prosecuted and sentenced murderers to prison was himself killed by a gunman on the streets of Inglewood, California on Thursday, Dec. 11<sup>th</sup>, according to Inglewood Police.</span></p>



<p><span style="font-size: 12pt;">Walter B. Dorsey III, 26, the son of Donna and Phil Dorsey of Leonardtown, Md., was confirmed to be the person who police say struggled to get to safety after being shot on a street in Ingleside about 8:30 in the evening. The <em>Los Angeles Daily News</em> reported that Dorsey collapsed on a sidewalk. A person was seen running from the area and police are seeking tips on the slaying.</span></p>



<p><span style="font-size: 12pt;">Dorsey, who has been living in California for several years after attending college, is the namesake for the late Maryland State Senator and longtime St. Mary’s County States Attorney Walter B. Dorsey. His grandfather, Judge Philip H. Dorsey was the Circuit Court Judge for the county until retiring in 1970. </span></p>



<p><span style="font-size: 12pt;">Dorsey’s late grandmother, Jeanne Mandel Dorsey, was Maryland’s First Lady, when she married Maryland Governor Marvin Mandel in 1974.</span></p>



<p><span style="font-size: 12pt;">Kansas City Chiefs General Manager John Michael Dorsey is the uncle of the slain man. John Dorsey played pro football with the Green Bay Packers and has held scouting and personnel positions with Seattle, Green Bay and now heads up Kansas City Chiefs. Helen Dorsey, of Leonardtown is the sister of Phil Dorsey and is noted for her leadership in various charitable and civic efforts.</span></p>



<p><span style="font-size: 12pt;">Ironically, it was Dorsey’s namesake and grandfather, shown here with him in this photo from 2003, Walter B. Dorsey, who was responsible for putting behind bars those who committed murder for twenty years. Walter B. Dorsey served five four-year terms as States Attorney and in 1958 was elected to the Maryland Senate.</span></p>



<p><span style="font-size: 12pt;">The late prosecutor was known as one of the best legal minds in Maryland and worked hard to bring to justice those who committed murder.</span></p>



<p><span style="font-size: 12pt;">Phil Dorsey, the father of the slain young man, is a longtime criminal defense attorney, developer, and promoter of many projects and was the moving force behind much of the commercial development in St. Mary’s County over the past thirty years. Phillip Dorsey, along with his late uncle John Rule Dorsey and his late father Walter Dorsey, developed and own a chain of Checkers Restaurants which stretch from Fredericksburg, Va., to Southern Maryland to Baltimore.</span></p>



<p><span style="font-size: 12pt;">Phil Dorsey is also an accomplished personal injury lawyer who has won significant victories for his clients, notably the El Toro II disaster in 1993 when three people were killed when a charter boat sank off of Point Lookout, Maryland.</span></p>

<p><strong>Feb. 16, 1988 – Dec. 11<sup>th</sup> 2014</strong></p>



<p>Walter B. Dorsey III, was born February 16th, 1988 in Leonardtown, Maryland. He was shot and killed in an apparent robbery/homicide in Los Angeles, California on December 11th, 2014. Walter was born and raised in St. Mary’s County, Maryland and attended college in Florida where he studied Alternative Health Sciences before heading out West. He resided in Venice and Mountain Center, California where he practiced organic farming licensed by the State of California for the last five years of his life.</p>



<p>He was particularly fond of the mountains and beaches of California and the Chesapeake Bay and its tributaries. He enjoyed boating, hiking, surfing and working on his California Ranch. He had a special gift and desire to heal which he utilized for the benefit of others. Walter touched many lives in his travels and will forever be remembered as the pirate. ; Aside from his extended family Walter left behind so many beautiful women, friends and people he considered family.</p>



<p>He was the son of Philip H. Dorsey III and Donna Dorsey of Leonardtown, Md. and Alexandria, Virginia. ; He is survived by his brother Robert Ernest Dorsey, 22, and his maternal Grandparents Robert Swallow and Joanne Swallow of Sun City, Florida and Northwoods, New Hampshire and Deborah Swallow of The Villages, Florida and Moody Beach, Maine.</p>



<p>He was predeceased by his paternal grandfather Walter Bryant Dorsey of Leonardtown and Jeanne Blackistone Dorsey Mandel of Colton’s Point, Maryland.</p>



<p>Walter is survived by his step-grandmother, Brenda Dorsey of Leonardtown, and Hon. Marvin Mandel of Annapolis.</p>



<p>Walter leaves behind a deeply devoted family, including his Uncles and Aunts, Paul and Sandy Dorsey of Olney, Maryland; John and Tricia Dorsey of Mission Hills, Kansas; Helen Dorsey of Medley’s Neck, Maryland; Dan and Diana Scannell of Falmouth, Maine, Lisa Swallow and Paul Willshire of Carlisle, MA., Denise Swallow of Reading, MA, and Eric, Jason, and Chrissy Swallow of Richmond, Virginia.</p>



<p>Walter also leaves behind his first cousins Bryant Dorsey, Austin Dorsey, Gabriella Dorsey, Eva Marie Dorsey, Kyle Bishop, Philip Bishop, Shauna Bishop, Sophia Hantzis, Grace Hantzis, Katie Scannell, Connor Scannell, Jack Dorsey, and Catherine Dorsey.</p>



<p>A gathering of Walter’s friends and family was held on Friday Dec. 19th in Santa Monica, California at the Woodlawn Cemetery, Mortuary and Mausoleum at 1847 14th Street, from 1-3p.m. followed by a life celebration on Venice Beach.</p>
