<p>April 8&comma; 1917 &&num;8211&semi; August 26&comma; 2013<&sol;p>&NewLine;<p>Services&colon;<br &sol;>&NewLine;PRIVATE &&num;8211&semi; AT A LATER DATE <&sol;p>&NewLine;<p>Josephine Mary &lpar;Banis&rpar; Smith&comma; 96&comma; of Charlotte Hall&comma; MD and formerly of Ocean City&comma; MD passed away on August 26&comma; 2013 at Charlotte Hall Veterans Home where she had been a resident since January 21&comma; 2013&period;<&sol;p>&NewLine;<p> She was born on April 8&comma; 1917 in Hudson&comma; MA&comma; daughter of the late Joseph Alfred Baniewicz and the late Stephanie &lpar;Poreda&rpar; Baniewicz&period;<&sol;p>&NewLine;<p> Josephine&&num;8217&semi;s first job was working in a wool factory at the age of 12&comma; making 2 cents an hour&period; You could buy a loaf of bread for 5 cents and butter for 7 cents&period; She survived the polio epidemic and the 1918 Spanish Influenza&period; While attending Thayer High School&comma; she held numerous jobs in factories&comma; waited tables and was a lifeguard&period; She graduated in 1935&period; After her marriage in 1940&comma; she and her husband moved to Washington&comma; DC&period; In 1955 she opened the Accokeek Bake Shoppe&period; A few years later she moved to Bryans Road and worked for North Indian Head Estates Development&period; Josephine moved to Ocean City&comma; MD in 1976 and enjoyed gardening and crabbing off her pier&period;<&sol;p>&NewLine;<p> In addition to her parents&comma; Josephine was predeceased by her beloved husband&comma; Michael Joseph Smith&semi; her son&comma; Jeffrey&semi; her 2 brothers&comma; Steven and Theodore&semi; and 3 of her sisters&comma; Sophie&comma; Ronnie&comma; and Veronica&period;<&sol;p>&NewLine;<p> Josephine is survived by her children&comma; Philip Smith of La Plata&comma; MD&comma; Jacqueline &&num;038&semi; husband Eugene St&period; Clair of Compton&comma; MD and their daughters&comma; Michelle &&num;038&semi; husband Robert Negro of West Virginia&comma; Stephanie &&num;038&semi; husband Robert Murphy of California&comma; MD&comma; Jeannine &&num;038&semi; husband Dave Embree of Navarre&comma; OH&comma; his son&comma; Eugene St&period; Clair&comma; II and fiancé Melanie Amoss of Arlington&comma; VA&semi; great grandchildren&comma; Caitlin &&num;038&semi; Haley Murphy&comma; Garrett &&num;038&semi; Alyssa Embree&comma; Philip&&num;8217&semi;s son Jeffrey and his girlfriend Amy&semi; and nephew&comma; Theodore W&period; Banis&comma; Jr&period; and family&period;<&sol;p>&NewLine;<p> Arrangements are being handled by Brinsfield-Echols Funeral Home&comma; P&period;A&period;&comma; 30195 Three Notch Road&comma; Charlotte Hall&comma; MD 20622&period; A private Celebration of Life will be held for family and friends at a later date&period;<&sol;p>&NewLine;<p> In Lieu of Flowers&comma; contributions may be made in her memory to&colon; Charlotte Hall Veterans Home&comma; 29449 Charlotte Hall Road&comma; Charlotte Hall&comma; MD 20622&period; <&sol;p>&NewLine;
