Pirate Poachers of the Bay
Over the past year, THE CHESAPEAKE TODAY has been highlighting the arrests of outlaw watermen in the Maryland and Virginia waters of the Chesapeake Bay and its tributaries.
Readers who have been following these violations and the tracking of the court appearances have been learning that, for most cases, the legal repercussions of these infractions have been very minor or non-existent.
The Pirates of General Assembly Plot Plunder While Burglar Works the Day Shift
PASADENA, MD. – Anne Arundel County is not short on criminals at this time of year. First, the nest of pirates convene for their annual convention on top of the hill overlooking Annapolis harbor, where they plot to plunder the wealth of the citizens and then appropriate that booty for themselves and spread it around to their friends. And then there are the common criminals who break into homes and steal while citizens are at work. This is the story of such a case from Anne Arundel County Police.
ANNAPOLIS, MD. – One member of Gov.-Elect Larry Hogan’s new cabinet members has been there before, in fact, more than one. But Homeland Security designee Thomas E. “Tim” Hutchins is the only one who has served both as a Cabinet member and while in that post, pulling a suspected DUI driver off a Maryland highway.
In a separate civil settlement agreement, Supreme agreed to pay another $101 million to settle a whistleblower lawsuit filed in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania, before U.S. District Court Judge Mary McLaughlin. The suit was filed by a former executive alleging that Supreme violated the False Claims Act by knowingly overcharging for supplying food and water under the SPV contract. The payment also resolves claims that, from June 2005 to December 2010, Supreme failed to disclose and pass through to the government rebates and discounts it obtained from its suppliers, as required by its SPV contract with the United States.
“These companies chose to commit their fraud in connection with a contract to supply food and water to our Nation’s fighting men and women serving in the desert,” said Memeger. “That kind of conduct is repugnant, and we will use every available resource to punish such illegal war profiteering.”
For Maryland Lawmakers, Campaign Funding Loosely Tied to Committee Membership
Many of Maryland’s representatives in the U.S. House and Senate get a significant portion of their campaign funding from industries affected by the committees on which they sit. For example, nearly a quarter of Sen. Ben Cardin’s contributions came from the financial sector, which is affected by legislation overseen by the Finance Committee on which Cardin sits.
