MOUNT VERNON, VA. – Fairfax County Police report that on Oct. 24, 2017, at about 8:20 pm, on South Kings Highway at Brick Hearth Court, Officers saw a man wanted out of Washington, D.C. for armed robbery walking with his pit bull and an acquaintance.

Police say that the man fugitive ran off and officers chased him. The preliminary investigation reveals the dog charged at the officers, resulting in one of them firing his duty weapon. The pit bull was shot one time and did not survive. Shelton Lee Coates, 26, of Alexandria, was arrested for a number of drug and weapon-related charges, including possession with intent to distribute cocaine and marijuana, and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. The Metropolitan Police Department was notified of the arrest and responded to address its charges.
