Coast Guard medevacs man from Carnival Pride near Virginia Beach, Va.

PORTSMOUTH, Va. — The Coast Guard has had a busy week flying passengers with various maladies from cruise ships up and down the east coast to medical centers on shore. 

medevaced a man from a cruise ship near Virginia Beach, Virginia, Saturday.

Sector Hampton Roads watchstanders in Portsmouth received notification from the 965-foot cruise ship Carnival Pride at about 8:42 p.m. that a 58-year-old male passenger was experiencing a heart attack.

A Coast Guard MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter crew launched from Air Station Elizabeth City, North Carolina, and arrived on scene with Carnival Pride east of the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel.

The helicopter crew hoisted the man to the helicopter and transported him to Norfolk International Airport, where EMS personnel transferred him to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital.

“As a result of close teamwork and coordination among federal, state and local partners, we were able to safely deliver this gentleman to higher medical care by the fastest means possible in less than optimal weather conditions,” said Capt. Richard Wester, commander, Sector Hampton Roads. “We hope for his full medical recovery and quick return to family.”

Coast Guard medevacs man 120 miles off Wilmington, NC

PORTSMOUTH, Va. — The Coast Guard medevaced a man from a cruise ship off the North Carolina coast Friday.

Watchstanders in the 5th District Command Center in Portsmouth received notification from the 1068-foot cruise ship Norwegian Breakaway at about 4:25 p.m. that a 60-year-old male passenger was reportedly experiencing kidney failure.

A Coast Guard MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter crew and C-130 Super Hercules aircraft crew launched from Air Station Elizabeth City, North Carolina, and arrived on scene with Norwegian Breakaway approximately 120 miles southeast of Wilmington, North Carolina.

The helicopter crew hoisted the man to the helicopter and transported him to New Hanover Regional Medical Center in Wilmington for treatment.

“The crews from Air Station Elizabeth City as well as the 5th District Command Center team seamlessly worked together to carry out a successful offshore hoist,” said Petty Officer 1st Class Thomas Barbay, operations unit controller for the case. “It was our priority to deliver the man to medical care as quickly and safely as possible.”

 

Ecstasy Passenger Flown by Coast Guard to Daytona Hospital

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — The Coast Guard medevacked a 53-year-old woman Friday from the cruise ship Carnival Ecstasy approximately 150 miles east of Port Canaveral.

Coast Guard Sector Jacksonville Command Center watchstanders were notified by the crew of the Carnival Ecstasy at 10:43 a.m. stating a passenger was experiencing chest pain. 

Coast Guard Air Station Clearwater helicopter crew launched an MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter. The helicopter crew arrived on scene at 2:30 p.m., hoisted the passenger along with a nurse from the cruise ship and transported them to Halifax Memorial Hospital in Daytona at 4:45 p.m.
