Virginia State Police: Man dead, shot self in head; motorcyclist Phillip D. Caudill, from Indiana clipped and flipped on I-64 ramp and died

Motorcyclist killed on I-64 ramp

FORT MONROE, VA.  The Virginia State Police crash investigation  of the crash of a Indiana man on a motorcycle on June 12, 2015 determined that a 2005 Yamaha motorcycle was traveling west on Interstate 64 at J. Clyde Morris Boulevard.

The motorcycle gave a hand signal to make a left lane change, as the driver began to change lanes he struck the right front of a 2006 Toyota Camry.

Police say that after impact the motorcycle operator lost control and the operator struck the pavement. 

The motorcycle operator was identified as Phillip D. Caudill, 65, of the 1100 block of Cottage Cir. Seymour, Indiana. The driver of the Toyota Camry was identified as Delores Felton, 81, of the 100 block of Old Court Rd., Randallstown, Md.

The motorcyclist was transported to Riverside Hospital where he died of his injuries.

Arizona Man Shoots Self Behind Richmond State Police Headquarters

RICHMOND, VA.  A 55-year-old resident of Arizona drove into a parking lot behind the Richmond headquarters of the Virginia State Police and fired a bullet into his head which did not immediately kill him.

Police say that at approximately 12:40 a.m., Saturday June 13, 2015, Virginia State Police dispatchers at the Richmond Field Office Headquarters noticed a vehicle pull into and park in the front parking lot of the headquarters building in the 9300 block of Brook Road. When the driver did not exit the vehicle, a trooper was called to the parking lot to check on the vehicle.

The trooper found the driver was armed with a firearm and suffering from an apparent head wound. The driver was talking with troopers and a negotiator, who responded to the scene, but refused to comply with commands to put down the weapon and safely exit the vehicle. State police deployed a flash bang diversionary tactic so they could safely approach the vehicle, remove the driver from the vehicle, and render medical assistance. The driver was disarmed and immediately taken to an ambulance at the scene. The male died enroute to the hospital.

State police report that no officer ever fired any shots during the course of the incident. The driver never fired at the troopers during the negotiations. No state police personnel were injured during the incident.

The incident is being investigated as a suicide. Brook Road was reopened at by 5 a.m.
