Spotsylvania Police Beat: Cops bet Subway bandit is good for slew of robberies across Virginia

Cosner’s Corner, Va. – Spotsylvania Sheriff Roger L. Harris reports that detectives have arrested a man for robbery who may be a suspect in many more robberies of stores across Virginia.

On December 13th patrol deputies responded to the Subway at Cosner’s Corner for a report of a robbery in progress where two armed subjects entered the business demanding money. The robbers fled the scene with an undisclosed amount of money prior to the arrival of law enforcement.

Detectives from the Criminal Investigations Division responded to the scene and were notified that an off duty area law enforcement officer was present in the parking lot during the incident. The officer was able to provide valuable information in reference to the get a way vehicle and suspects.

Detectives continued to investigate the matter and discovered that the Newport News Police Department was working a recent series of robberies involving a similar vehicle.

Spotsylvania Detectives along with members of the Newport News PD, were able to identify the vehicle and registered owner as Michael Thomas Ellison (23 years of age) of York County, VA. Mr. Ellison was identified as one of the robbers involved in the robbery of the Subway.

Warrants for Armed robbery, Use of a firearm in Commission of a felony, Wearing a mask in public, Possession of a firearm after being a convicted felon and Grand Larceny were obtained.

Ellison was arrested on Sunday, December 14th in a shopping center in Newport News, VA without incident.

He is currently being held without bond on Spotsylvania County charges, but further charges are pending in reference to the robberies in the Tidewater area. Detectives are also working strong leads on who the second robbery suspect was. An arrest is expected to be made in the near future.
